In a world full of possibilities, there’s something amazing about women traveling alone. It’s all about discovering yourself, feeling independent, and exploring without limits. Solo travel for women can be challenging, especially if you’re preparing to travel alone for the first time. I’ve put together a guide with tips based on my own experiences and situations I’ve encountered on my travels, with the aim of making your journey easier and more carefree.

Do Your Research

In my opinion, one of the most enjoyable parts of traveling is the planning stage. I understand that this may vary for each individual, and for some, it might even feel burdensome, but I personally delight in researching destinations for my travels. I maintain a wishlist of places I wish to visit, and when the time comes to plan for a specific destination, I dive into my research.

You can download a free printable travel bucket list right here: Printable Travel Bucket List

I delve into the history and culture of the city I’m visiting, explore museums that pique my interest, seek out parks, and scout for cafes. I also look into the typical street food specialties (while I enjoy sitting down at a restaurant, I prefer grabbing something on the go). Cafes serving good coffee are my go-to spots where I can relax, read a book, or jot down notes in my travel journal (yes, I have one!).

My advice to you, especially if you’re preparing for your first solo trip, is to research common destinations for women traveling alone. Although most destinations are safe for solo female travelers these days, someone embarking on their first solo journey wouldn’t necessarily choose India for such an endeavor! So, do your research on destinations.

There’s a plethora of useful apps available for the city you’re visiting, such as public transportation apps and more.I’ll be recommending apps I’ve discovered for each city separately in individual posts about that specific city. Stay tuned for those insights!

Packing

When embarking on a solo travel adventure, packing efficiently is key to ensuring you have everything you need while still keeping your luggage manageable. Here are some tips to help you pack everything you’ll need:

  1. Make a Packing List: Before you start packing, create a comprehensive list of all the items you’ll need for your trip. This can include clothing, toiletries, electronics, documents, and any other essentials. Check off items as you pack to ensure you don’t forget anything.
  2. Pack Light: Aim to pack only the essentials to avoid lugging around heavy bags. Choose versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched to create different outfits. Consider the climate and activities you’ll be participating in when selecting your clothing.
  3. Limit Toiletries: Bring only the toiletries you’ll need for the duration of your trip. Consider purchasing travel-sized containers to minimize space and weight. Remember to comply with TSA regulations if you’re flying.
  4. Pack for Safety and Security: Consider packing a money belt or neck pouch to keep your valuables safe while traveling. Additionally, make copies of important documents such as your passport, ID, and travel insurance information, and keep them in a separate location from the originals.
  5. Don’t Forget Electronics and Chargers: Bring along any electronic devices you’ll need, such as your smartphone, camera, or e-reader, as well as their chargers and adapters. Consider investing in a portable charger to keep your devices powered while on the go.

Unexpected situations

Unexpected situations like long layovers or storms can put a damper on travel plans, but they also present opportunities for creativity and relaxation. Here are some tips to entertain yourself during unexpected delays:

  1. Read a Book: Pack a book or download e-books onto your device before your trip. Use the downtime to immerse yourself in a captivating story or learn something new.
  2. Listen to Podcasts or Music: Load up your phone with podcasts or create playlists of your favorite music genres. Tune in to entertaining podcasts or enjoy a relaxing playlist to pass the time.
  3. Watch Movies or TV Shows: Download movies or episodes of your favorite TV shows onto your device or laptop. Streaming services often offer offline viewing options for subscribers.
  4. Play Games: Bring along a deck of cards, travel-sized board games, or download gaming apps on your phone. Challenge yourself to puzzles, word games, or strategy games to keep your mind engaged.
  5. Write or Journal: Use the downtime to jot down your thoughts, memories, or travel experiences in a journal.
  6. Stretch or Meditate: Combat travel fatigue by practicing yoga stretches or meditation exercises. Find a quiet corner to relax, stretch your muscles, and clear your mind.
  7. Strike up Conversations: Strike up conversations with fellow travelers who are also waiting out the delay. You might make new friends, exchange travel tips, or even find companions for future adventures.
  8. Explore the Airport: Take a leisurely stroll around the airport to stretch your legs and explore shops, restaurants, and art installations. Some airports even offer amenities like lounges, libraries, or gardens for travelers to enjoy.
  9. Work or Study: If you have work or study materials with you, take advantage of the downtime to catch up on tasks or assignments. Find a quiet spot with access to power outlets and Wi-Fi, if available.
  10. Rest and Relax: Lastly, don’t forget to take care of yourself by resting and recharging during unexpected delays. Find a comfortable spot to sit or lie down, close your eyes, and take a nap if needed.

By staying adaptable and finding ways to entertain yourself during unexpected situations, you can turn delays into opportunities for relaxation, productivity, or even spontaneous adventures!

Transportation

When we travel, how we get around is a big deal. Here’s why transportation matters:

  1. Getting There: Good transportation makes places easier to reach. Whether it’s airports, train stations, or bus terminals, well-connected hubs help us get to where we want to go without a hassle.
  2. Seeing the Sights: How we travel can shape our experience. Whether it’s driving through beautiful landscapes, taking a scenic train ride, or cruising along rivers, the journey itself can be part of the adventure.
  3. Feeling the Local Vibe: Using local transportation like buses or trams or ferries can immerse us in the culture of a place. It’s a chance to interact with locals, see how they live, and experience the rhythm of daily life.
  4. Being Eco-Friendly: Choosing green transportation options like walking, biking, or using public transit helps reduce our impact on the environment. It’s a small way we can be more sustainable while we travel.
  5. Staying Flexible: Travel plans can change in an instant. Having flexible transportation options lets us adapt to surprises, like changing flights or exploring new routes, without stress.

I use the Skyscanner app to find plane tickets to my desired destination, and I also visit official websites to compare prices. However, if you want to be worry-free when it comes to plane tickets, use Skyscanner. As for transportation within the city I’m visiting, I prefer public transportation.

So, whether we’re flying, cruising, or taking the bus, transportation isn’t just about getting from A to B. It’s a key part of the travel experience that can make our journeys smoother, more memorable, and more sustainable.

Accommodation

When it comes to solo travel, accommodation preference is entirely personal. Some feel more at ease surrounded by others, while others relish the solitude. Some prefer a cozy apartment, while others opt for the amenities of a hotel room. The choice is yours.

As for me, when I travel solo and stay in a city for less than 5 days, especially if it’s a big city and I want to be closer to the city center, I choose a hostel, preferably a female dormitory. If I’m staying longer than 5 days and alone, I feel most comfortable in a rented apartment. If I’m traveling with my partner or a friend, the location of the hotel room or apartment doesn’t matter much; it could be half an hour away by metro (I’m a fan of public transportation).

In Spain, I had a great experience renting a room in an apartment where the owner also lived, and it was exceptionally pleasant.

So, the choice is yours. It’s all about how you feel most comfortable and safe. The platforms I use for booking accommodation are Booking , Hostelworld and Airbnb.

Hostel Tips

For solo female travelers, staying in hostels can be an exhilarating and immersive experience, providing opportunities for connection, adventure, and cultural exchange. However, navigating hostel life as a woman requires careful consideration of safety, comfort, and social dynamics. Here, we delve deeper into each aspect to ensure a memorable and enjoyable hostel stay:

  1. Choose Female-Only Dorms: Many hostels offer female-only dormitories, providing a sense of security and camaraderie among solo female travelers. Opting for these dorms can offer peace of mind and foster connections with like-minded women.
  2. Research Hostel Reviews: Before booking a hostel, thoroughly research online reviews from other solo female travelers. Look for feedback on safety, cleanliness, and atmosphere, paying attention to mentions of security measures such as lockers and 24-hour reception.
  3. Trust Your Instincts: As a solo traveler, it’s essential to trust your instincts and prioritize personal safety. If a hostel or its surroundings feel unsafe or uncomfortable, don’t hesitate to seek alternative accommodations.
  4. Secure Your Belongings: Invest in a reliable padlock to secure your belongings in hostel lockers. Consider using a portable safe or lockbox for valuables such as passports, electronics, and cash, especially in shared spaces.
  5. Utilize Female-Friendly Resources: Explore online communities and forums tailored to solo female travelers for valuable tips, advice, and recommendations. These platforms offer insights from experienced travelers and can help alleviate any concerns or uncertainties.

Airbnb Tips

Airbnb can be a fantastic option for solo female travelers, offering a more intimate and personalized accommodation experience compared to traditional hotels. Here are some valuable tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable Airbnb stay:

  1. Choose Superhosts: Look for listings hosted by Airbnb Superhosts, who have a proven track record of providing exceptional hospitality and receiving consistently positive reviews. Superhosts are often more attentive to their guests’ needs and may offer additional amenities or support.
  2. Prioritize Safety and Location: When selecting an Airbnb, prioritize safety by choosing well-reviewed listings in safe neighborhoods with good transportation links. Opt for accommodations with secure entrances and consider the proximity to public transportation or popular attractions.
  3. Read Reviews Carefully: Take the time to read previous guests’ reviews thoroughly to gain insights into the property’s cleanliness, safety, and host communication. Pay attention to any mentions of safety concerns or issues that may impact your stay.
  4. Communicate with Hosts: Before booking, communicate openly with your potential hosts to ask any questions or express specific concerns about safety or amenities. A responsive and accommodating host can help alleviate any worries and ensure a smooth check-in process.
  5. Pack Smart: Pack a portable door alarm or doorstop alarm for added security, especially if you’re staying in accommodations with shared entrances or unfamiliar surroundings. Additionally, familiarize yourself with the property’s emergency exits and safety procedures.
  6. Stay Connected: Keep friends or family members informed of your Airbnb booking details, including the address and contact information of your host. Maintain regular communication with loved ones throughout your stay, especially if traveling alone in unfamiliar territory.

Hotel Tips

Traveling solo as a woman can be incredibly empowering, but it’s essential to prioritize safety and comfort when choosing accommodations. Here are some valuable tips for solo female travelers staying in hotels:

  1. Research Hotel Safety: Before booking a hotel, research its safety measures and reputation, especially if traveling to unfamiliar destinations. Look for properties with positive reviews regarding security, well-lit surroundings, and attentive staff.
  2. Choose Well-Located Hotels: Opt for hotels located in safe, central areas with easy access to public transportation and amenities. Avoid secluded or poorly lit areas, especially when walking alone at night.
  3. Use Hotel Security Features: Take advantage of hotel security features, such as deadbolts, chain locks, and peepholes, to enhance your safety and privacy. Familiarize yourself with emergency exits and evacuation procedures upon arrival.
  4. Avoid Sharing Personal Information: Exercise caution when sharing personal information with hotel staff or fellow guests, especially in common areas or during casual conversations. Protect your privacy and avoid disclosing details of your travel plans.
  5. Keep Valuables Secure: Use the hotel safe or lockbox to store valuables such as passports, electronics, and cash when not in use. Avoid leaving valuables unattended in your hotel room or common areas.

Taking Photos

Get camera-ready for your solo adventure to ensure you capture every moment! As a passionate photographer, I thrive on snapping shots of landmarks, landscapes, and the vibrant souls I encounter along the way. But let’s not forget the importance of being in the frame yourself. When flying solo, you’ve got three options in your arsenal.

Option one—the classic selfie. With your trusty smartphone, you can effortlessly snap a self-portrait, a skill we’ve all mastered in this digital age.

Option two—recruit a photographer. Selecting the right person for the job is an art. I tend to seek out fellow shutterbugs or those with a knack for capturing the perfect shot. It’s not just about the photo; it’s also an opportunity for a delightful chat.

And then there’s option three—the pro move. Equip yourself with a tripod or other nifty gadgets for the ultimate solo photography experience. Personally, I’ve never been a fan of selfie sticks. Instead, opt for a compact and portable tripod that can fit snugly in your backpack. Alternatively, invest in a Bluetooth remote (I snagged one on AliExpress for a mere $2), allowing you to position your phone wherever your heart desires—a railing, a wall, or even a tabletop. Just remember to keep a watchful eye on your gear while you strike that perfect pose.

Safety

A girl traveling solo for the first time must prioritize her safety. Personally, I’m not one to constantly be on high alert, but I pride myself on being resourceful and never putting myself in uncomfortable situations, especially when alone. You could say I have a good intuition, and it’s never failed me. But we’re all different. When it comes to solo travel, no one expects you to stay cooped up in your hotel room and avoid interacting with others altogether. That would defeat the purpose of traveling, wouldn’t it? However, you should always be aware of your surroundings and the situation you’re in.

Rule number one: Never wander alone in the dark, especially in quiet, dimly lit streets with few people around or in unfamiliar suburbs. Personally, this isn’t a problem for me when I travel solo. I like to make the most of my day, waking up early and winding down by 10 or 11 p.m.

Rule number two: Never go to strangers’ apartments or accept rides from people you’ve just met. If you enjoy meeting new people, by all means, go for it. Get to know them. Go out to a café or bar. Have a conversation, exchange social media handles. Someone with good intentions won’t invite you over to their place or offer to drive you to someplace interesting on the first night. Trust me.

Rule number three: Research the place you’re visiting. I might sound like a broken record constantly mentioning research, but we live in an age where information is at our fingertips. I’m aware that not all information on the internet is 100% accurate, some of it may be outdated, but if you dig deep enough, you’ll find recurring themes in the information that makes sense. Such as neighborhoods in the city to avoid or not pass through at night. The state of crime in the country, etc. By informing yourself, you’ve already done most of the work. And you’ll be able to enjoy your travels and exploring the city.

Top 3 Solo Travel Destinations for First-Timers in Europe

From my own experience and the experiences of some of my friends who enjoy solo travel or live in these cities, here are the top 3 cities for solo travel. These cities boast excellent public transportation, safety, ease of navigation, good hostels, activities, and plenty of ways to keep your day packed with excitement. The three destinations are Prague, Barcelona, and Amsterdam.

Prague

Prague offers a seamless experience for exploring on foot, with most attractions within walking distance. However, if you’re feeling fatigued, the city’s robust public transportation system, including the metro, trams, and buses, provides a convenient alternative. Personally, I found the tram network particularly efficient and used it for the majority of my travels within the city.

Safety is paramount for solo travelers, and Prague certainly delivers on this front. Throughout my time there, I never once felt threatened or uneasy. Despite the visible presence of homeless individuals, they never posed any threat or caused disruptions. It’s a testament to the city’s overall sense of security.

Museum enthusiasts will find plenty to indulge in while in Prague. From art to history, there’s a museum for every interest. Despite the wealth of cultural attractions, I opted against purchasing a city card during my visit. My decision stemmed from meticulous research beforehand, weighing the cost against the attractions I planned to visit and the time I had available. Ultimately, for me, it didn’t make financial sense, especially since I didn’t utilize public transportation extensively, and certain key attractions, like the National Museum, weren’t covered.

In Prague, you can book high-quality free walking tours. This way, you can learn a lot about this unique city. It’s customary to tip the guide at the end of the tour if you’re satisfied. My warm recommendation is for Prague Free Tour. Also, during my stay, I booked a ghost and legends walking tour with them, and I had a fantastic time.

For fellow aficionados of museums, history, enigmatic locales, classical music, and even astronomy, Prague is an absolute gem. Its rich tapestry of culture and heritage promises an unforgettable solo adventure. Whether you’re gazing at the stars from the city’s observatories or immersing yourself in the celestial wonders depicted in its museums, Prague offers a celestial experience that will leave you spellbound.

Barcelona

For those longing to be by the sea and traveling solo, Barcelona is the perfect destination. It’s not your typical beach resort where you’d lounge all day, and if you’re alone, eventually succumb to boredom. In Barcelona, you can hit the beach, wander through charming streets, explore museums, galleries, markets, and even climb up to Tibidabo Mountain. It truly is a dream destination for solo travelers.

Barcelona is safe, despite online rumors of pickpocketing. Throughout my time there, I never once felt like I was a target or in any danger. However, don’t let my experience make you complacent—be cautious. There have been cases where tourists ended up without money or their cameras. So, it’s essential to take standard precautions against pickpockets, but don’t let it ruin your vacation. Barcelona boasts a rather efficient metro system, along with buses and trams, making it easy to get around this sprawling city.

Tips For Solo Travel In Barcelona

  1. Stay in a Central Location: Choose accommodation in a central area like the Gothic Quarter or Eixample, which allows easy access to major attractions and public transportation.
  2. Learn Some Spanish Phrases: While many locals speak English, knowing some basic Spanish phrases can enhance your experience and interactions.
  3. Stay Aware of Pickpockets: Barcelona is known for pickpocketing, especially in crowded tourist areas like Las Ramblas. Keep your belongings secure and be cautious in crowded places.
  4. Use Public Transportation: Barcelona has an efficient metro and bus system that makes it easy to get around the city. Consider purchasing a multi-day travel pass for convenience.
  5. Explore Beyond Tourist Hotspots: While attractions like Sagrada Familia and Park Güell are must-sees, don’t forget to explore lesser-known neighborhoods like Gràcia or El Born for a more authentic experience.
  6. Try Local Cuisine: Barcelona offers a diverse culinary scene, from traditional Catalan dishes to international cuisine. Don’t miss trying local specialties like paella, tapas, and seafood.
  7. Join Group Tours or Activities: Consider joining group tours or activities, such as walking tours or cooking classes, to meet other travelers and locals while exploring the city.
  8. Stay Safe at Night: Barcelona is generally safe, but it’s essential to stay vigilant, especially when exploring nightlife areas. Stick to well-lit streets and avoid walking alone in unfamiliar areas late at night.
  9. Enjoy the Beach: Take advantage of Barcelona’s beautiful beaches, such as Barceloneta Beach, for relaxation and people-watching. Just keep an eye on your belongings while you soak up the sun.
  10. Embrace Solo Dining: Don’t be afraid to dine alone! Barcelona has plenty of cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy delicious meals solo while observing the vibrant street life.

Remember to trust your instincts, stay open to new experiences, and most importantly, have fun exploring Barcelona on your solo adventure!

Amsterdam

Away from its “coffee shops” and the Red Light District, Amsterdam is one of the European cities that stole my heart. I visited Amsterdam in June, where the sun set at 10 p.m., providing the perfect climate—pleasant, rain-free, and not overly hot. It was an idyllic time indeed.

Amsterdam is a city where you hardly need any mode of transportation other than a bicycle. With its flat terrain, well-maintained bike lanes, and minimal cars on the streets, Amsterdam is a cyclist’s paradise. If you steer clear of the tourist hotspots, where visitors gather to indulge in marijuana or gawk at the ladies in the windows, Amsterdam offers a delightful experience.

Strolling along the picturesque canals, exploring numerous museums, indulging in the perfect slice of apple pie with whipped cream, and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere—this is what Amsterdam is all about.

I highly recommend getting the Iamsterdam City Card! I made the most out of it, and it’s truly worth it! Amsterdam offers endless activities, ensuring you’ll never be bored, and it’s very easy to navigate.
