Year of Horror
Ever since I was a child, horror films have been my ultimate passion. Year after year, I’ve eagerly awaited the next spine-chilling masterpiece to grace the silver screen. But let me tell you, 2024 has been something truly special. This year, the horror genre has hit its stride, delivering a stream of exceptional films that have both terrified and thrilled me. Narrowing down my top 10 list was no easy task, but here are my personal favorites from this remarkable year of horror.
10. Maxxxine
If there’s one thing this movie proves, it’s that marketing matters. The highly anticipated final installment in Ti West’s trilogy captures the vibrant 1980s slasher and giallo vibe with Mia Goth once again in the spotlight. While it’s my least favorite of the trilogy, Maxxxine earns its place here for its stunning costumes, cinematography, set design, and an irresistibly nostalgic soundtrack. It may not have met my lofty expectations, but it’s a visual feast with a killer atmosphere.
9. Speak No Evil
This remake of the Scandinavian psychological horror features James McAvoy in one of his most intense roles yet. His performance is chilling, showcasing his knack for portraying mentally disturbed characters (a skill we first saw in Split). The film kept me on edge with its relentless tension and dark themes. While it doesn’t surpass the original, it’s a worthy adaptation that left me deeply unsettled.
8. Alien: Romulus
As a devoted fan of the Alien franchise, I’m thrilled to say this latest installment did not disappoint. Directed by Fede Álvarez, who previously helmed the phenomenal Evil Dead remake, Alien: Romulus blends intense action with a claustrophobic horror atmosphere. The practical effects are stunning, the performances—particularly from the lead actresses—are compelling, and the overall tone fits perfectly within the franchise’s legacy. It’s a solid addition to the Alien saga that fans should not miss.
7. Late Night with the Devil
A retro gem set in the 1970s, this film feels like an unearthed time capsule of fear. The originality of its concept, combined with an eerie execution, makes it one of the most creative horrors of the year. It’s chilling, stylish, and absolutely unforgettable for fans of old-school horror aesthetics.
6. Longlegs
What’s better than Nicolas Cage? Nicolas Cage in a satanic horror film. Though his screen time is limited, his performance is unforgettable, bringing an eerie gravitas to the story. Maika Monroe shines in the lead role, carrying the slow-burn narrative with finesse. With its haunting cinematography and sinister atmosphere, Longlegs is a devilishly good time.
5. Oddity
Oddity is a slow-burn horror that masterfully blends psychological tension with supernatural intrigue. The eerie atmosphere is heightened by its claustrophobic setting and unsettling imagery, like the haunting life-sized mannequin. With its deliberate pacing and a perfect ending, this film left a lasting impression—unsettling in the best way.
4. Strange Darling
This movie is something entirely different—unpredictable, tense, and absolutely gripping. The lead actress delivers an outstanding performance, and the visuals are mesmerizing. Shot on 35mm film, the colors, framing, and set design harmonize perfectly to create a visually stunning masterpiece. From costumes to cinematography, every detail feels meticulously crafted. Strange Darling is truly exceptional.
3. Heretic
Hugh Grant as a lead in a religious horror film? I was skeptical at first, but his performance blew me away. Known for romantic comedies, Grant delivers a transformative and deeply unsettling portrayal that lingers long after the credits roll. Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East complement him perfectly, making Heretic a deeply intelligent and captivating film. I didn’t blink once while watching this movie.
2. The Substance
Where do I even begin? With Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley leading, this body horror masterpiece directed by Coralie Fargeat is pure cinematic brilliance. The film critiques Hollywood’s vanity and obsession with perfection, wrapping its biting satire in a visually stunning and deeply unsettling narrative. Its grotesque yet mesmerizing imagery evokes the visceral intensity of Cronenberg’s works, while its haunting visuals echo classics like The Shining. Demi Moore delivers what might be the performance of her career in this dark, visceral tale. Every frame of this movie left me mesmerized.
1. Nosferatu
Robert Eggers’ long-awaited reimagining of Nosferatu is nothing short of a gothic masterpiece. Filmed on authentic locations with a meticulous eye for detail, Eggers has created a hauntingly beautiful tale that feels both timeless and refreshingly original. Bill Skarsgård embodies the monstrous yet tragic Count Orlok with chilling perfection, while Lily-Rose Depp delivers a phenomenal performance as the tormented protagonist, bringing depth and vulnerability to her role. This is the gold standard for remakes—reverent to the original but with a bold and unique voice. For me, Nosferatu is not just the best horror film of 2024 but a crowning achievement for the genre itself.
Final Thoughts
2024 has been a banner year for horror. From visually stunning reimaginings to innovative storytelling, these films remind us why we love the genre so much. Each movie on this list resonated with me for different reasons, whether it was the performances, the atmosphere, or the sheer brilliance of the filmmaking.
